We
live in the "lowlands" in the north of the country so our first
trip was to the mittleland, the foothills of the Alps in Switzerland. A lazy
circular journey by train, ferry and mountain railway to the top of Mount
Rigi (1797.5m) and back. It was a brilliant day out, despite the cold
damp weather. Not only because we had the fun of playing with the Swiss public
transport network (the entire journey was on a single ticket purchased at
the start). But we also got our first glimpse of the high peaks to the south,
to Mount Titlis and the Bernese Oberland. It was incredible. And the hot chocolate
they serve in the hotel on the top certainly benefited from the altitude as
well as the vieiw.
