Imagine the following experience if you can. You are standing in a large town square in the dark being serenaded by a series of bands. So far so good, but these bands appear to be the following, Escapees from Loony Tunes, thirty or more giant carrots, Timelords, a detachment from a Klingon Honour Guard, Rejects from Mad Max. and Strange Arabian types decorated with fish. No I haven't been visiting the local hemp shop, I promise I was in a legal state of mind, I was just visiting the first night of the local Fastnacht celebrations. For those who don't know; Fastnacht is the Swiss equivalent of Mardi Gras and the experience I am describing is Guegge music. Guegge music is lots of loud drums usually played in time with brass instruments roughly playing well known tunes, sometimes they even all play the same tune.
I'm surprised the world hasn't heard more of Fasnacht. The local Swiss really do put a lot of energy and effort into it. Admittedly the Swiss don't have the weather of Rio but that doesn't seem to stop the partying all day and all night. It just moves them in doors a little more.
