There comes a time in every expats stay when they start to miss home, at least in some small way. This is usually in the form of pining for a taste of the old country. Here in Switzerland there seems to be a common theme to the things expats from the UK miss. It generally falls into three categories, High Goats

1. Bacon - This tends to be the top of any non vegetarian expats list, ( it is even on some vegetarians list) The local bacon is sliced so thin you could read through it, it cooks to a crisp in seconds and doesn't seem to taste right in some indefinable way.

2. Beer - This is on the list as a close second. They do brew beer here in the German tradition, although for some reason it tastes better the other side of the border ( maybe it's the water), ditto in France where they use a Belgian approach. However even though these excellent alternatives aren't too far away it's still British Beer that's top of the list.

3. Chocolate - This is a strange one in a country which is widely and justifiably regarded as the chocolate capital of the world but it doesn't taste like home and that's the problem.

Beyond this list things are less consistent but can include cheese, curry's, convenience foods etc. Ain't people strange.
