New
Arrivals to Switzerland from abroard, are soon left in no doubt by the Swiss,
that they regard themselves as the hardest working paople in Europe (possibly
the world). They reason the cite is the fact that the basic working week is
41.5hrs and many Swiss work well beyond those hours. All this is true. However
what they don't tell you is that the Swiss think nothing of taking a month
or longer as a Summer holiday. What is more it's endemic, The local bakers
closed for a month, the Deli up the road did like wise. Indeed one person
I know who is self employed, has been on extended leave in South Africa for
the last few months, and does not expect to have any problem with customers
on return.
Even people working for large organisations, frequently take 3-4 weeks holiday in the Summer plus a skiing holiday in the Winter. When you start to calculate the average number of hours per year worked in Switzerland against the UK people in the UK come off worst. This is something we've definitley got to change.
