LauterbrunnenAs far as possible, it is my intention not to simply write a travelogue for the content of this site. But every once in a while it is necessary.

We were recently lucky enough to share a day walking in the mountains in the winter. We set off early, our target being Grindelwald As usual the day was dull and dreary when we set out and the forecast was for rain/snow, depending on how high we went. But being British we went anyway....and a good thing too. The drive was dull and damp until we started to climb into the heart of the Bernese Oberland and then the cloud started to break. It was incredible, the higher we climbed the more the sun shone until we got to Grindelwald when it was very near perfect.

A quick second breakfast, It had been a 2.5hr drive, and then a ride up the FirstBahn Gondola to the top station at 2168m. Then a stroll up to 2286m before descending through the Bachlaeger and then on down to Waldspitz and then round to Bort before descending to Grindelwald. It was incredible The snow had been prepared (pisted) for walking and although there was the occasional snow boarder it was mostly being used by walkers of all ages. It can be amazing to watch the Swiss at leisure. We were over 2000m. above sea level and surrounded by retired Swiss taking a gentle stroll to the top of a mountain. I can't think of any other country this might happen in.

The sun shone all day and the weather was warm in the sun, although still subzero in the shade. We wandered along watching the occasional show shower on the Eiger with hardly a breath of wind to send them our way.In the late afternoon we completed the descent by cablecar, had a meal and went home. The day had been truly Perfect.
